Whether they’re working behind a desk, in the field, or on the road, trailblazing women are paving their own way in Music City. Now they’re taking a break from their busy schedules to share their success stories with us.
EARLY ASPIRATIONS
My career has been built on relationships. I began my events and consulting business after deciding to branch off on my own, realizing there was a real need for experience and event curation in Nashville. I was lucky that Soho House, a social club for creatives based out of London, was one of my earlier consulting clients. That relationship grew over four years to what it is today. The pandemic put a lot of things in perspective, and I wanted to grow with a company that I believed in. I never knew I would become HMC of Soho House Nashville, but I’ve always been a connector which ties in perfectly to hospitality. I’ve always wanted to do something that helps me be creative, but I never was able to pinpoint what that might be. I’ve had a lot of different roles in my life in different fields, but I’ve always had the mission to do something that fills my cup creatively. This role definitely does.
CHALLENGES FACED
I think my greatest challenge throughout my entire career has been imposter syndrome. It’s something that so many of us deal with, that self-doubt and internal dialogue. It is possible to overcome by acknowledging your inherent self-worth. The biggest thing I struggle with now is the ability to turn off. Who doesn’t struggle with work/life balance? It’s an American epidemic. I’m working on taking time off, but it’s hard to do when you’ve been trained to do the opposite your whole life.
THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS
Success to me is finding work that makes you happy and creatively fulfills you. To be successful you need to make space for what’s important in your life; that means work, but also your family, friends, and personal goals.
THE NASHVILLE CONNECTION
Nashville has inspired my career. I grew up here and was disillusioned with the city. When I left for university, I never intended to come back. When I eventually did return, I noticed Nashville had changed and I wanted to be a part of that change, so I stayed. My favorite part of my job is seeing all the connections that are made at Soho House between our members. It is truly a creative community that I am proud to be a part of in my own small way while Nashville is on the cusp of this cultural renaissance.
ADVICE FOR OTHERS
Never meet a stranger; remember that relationships are important and hard work is tantamount; and try to see the creative potential in everyone you meet. Nashville is in reality a small town so don’t be scared to reach out to ask someone for a coffee or advice, but come prepared for those conversations and please, never use the phrase “pick your brain.”
