Birmingham, Alabama
You can read about the events of the Civil Rights Movement, but, reading about them is simply not the same as visiting the sites where they happened. And there’s no better place to visit than the Civil Rights National Monument in Birmingham, Alabama. Walk where Dr. King and the foot soldiers of the movement marched. Meander through Kelly Ingram Park where attack dogs and firehoses were used in a failed effort to discourage the pursuit of equity and basic human rights. See the 16th Street Baptist Church, where four innocents were lost to a senseless bombing in 1963.
Prepare to spend several hours at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute where the stories of events that took place some 60 years ago are told with reverence and detail. And, while you’re here, make sure to check out our authentic soul food scene, our incredible barbecue, and world-renowned, James Beard Award-winning chefs and restaurants. Speak with anyone who has visited and they will tell you that Birmingham is a bundle of surprises. From the grace with which the city addresses its history to a food and drink scene that puts cities in order of magnitude larger to shame, Birmingham knows how to entertain.
