Where there is positivity, there is always possibility.
This is a motto that the people of Tupelo live by. It is what drives them to look after each other and keep smiling through the tough times.
Let's take a look at some of the local heroes taking positive action, not wishful thinking, to shape the future of this Southern town.
Adam Morgan, Blue Canoe
While the town might be best known for its Elvis connection, the community’s musical heritage still beats strong. Adam Morgan, owner of Blue Canoe, helps regional musicians take the next steps in their careers. When he’s not helping to shine a spotlight on new talent, he’s using his multiple venues’ menus to help support other local restaurants.
“Our restaurant community here works hard to build each other up ...rather than trying to undercut anyone,” he says. “The positive culture we’ve created is rare and I’m really proud of that.”
Tyson Quinn, Real Men Stand Up
“The Tupelo spirit is a sense of pride about your community. It doesn’t take long for someone who visits to feel our spirit,” says Tyson Quinn of Real Men Stand Up.
Since starting his mentoring organization in 2015, Tyson and his team have helped thousands of young men in the community, providing encouragement and support when they need it most.
Lauren McElwain, Cooking as a First Language
For Lauren McElwain, a strong sense of positivity is what drove her to launch her non-profit, Cooking as a First Language.
“I’ve seen how powerful food can be for bringing people together,” she says.
Together they try to break down cultural barriers and build community over cooking and sharing a meal.
“We should all try new things because there is potential for new friendships and passions to grow. And even if you try something and it’s maybe not your favorite thing, it always makes for a great story later and a way to relate to others in conversations.”
When you spend time in Tupelo, it doesn’t take long to feel the positive spirit and sense of community. This support gives the people here confidence to do things their way, and fortunately for all who get to enjoy it, create the tastes of tomorrow.
