The Appalachian Mountains put on quite the show each fall with record-breaking numbers of leaf peepers from near and far. And, as the highest peaks east of The Rockies, Boone, North Carolina, earns its place as ski capital of the South with three premier ski resorts, a tubing park and ample après ski activities fit for bunnies and Olympians alike.

Average high winter temps occasionally reach the 40s. So, you’ll spot more than a few snow blowers in these parts. But, no need to worry as the powder is fine as the slopes are sweet. All three of the premier ski resorts offer extra amenities such as gear rental, ice skating, and shoeing and lessons. Yet, each have their own personality. At the area’s first ski resort, Appalachian Ski Resort, the sign reads “THE Place To Learn To Ski” at the base of the mountain where the French Swiss Ski College offers daily group and private lessons. There’s a daycare on site at Sugar Mountain Resort so that the “big kids” can ride on the high speed 6-passenger lift up to the summit and ski double-black diamond slopes amongst myriad other trails. Beech Mountain Resort boasts the highest peak at 5,506 feet––a mountain bike mecca come summer. But, it’s the resort’s ski village where après ski is a sport all its own. Sip local at the onsite Beech Mountain Brewing Company, or stick around for Thursday night trivia at the Taproom and Grill.
If shredding the gnar isn’t your vernacular, Hawk’s Nest Snow Tubing Park might satisfy that snow crave over in Seven Devils with Grandfather Mountain practically in your rear view mirror. With 30 lanes and four distinct tubing areas, this snow adventure is one for the whole family. Just make sure to purchase tickets in advance, as each tubing session has a limited amount of tickets available.

The Cardinal’s Wild Game Burger paired with a Cheerwine Float or pint of your favorite regional craft brew oughta do it. And, if the suds are what you’re after, Appalachian Mountain Brewing Company is the hook-up with a variety of beers and ciders fresh from the brewery’s tanks. Lost Province Brewing Company is your downtown go-to for craft beer and the finest wood-fired pizzas sourced from local farms and producers. Still downtown, Vidalia Restaurant and Wine Bar’s menu reads like a “who’s who” list of farmers. The bistro also offers a 60+ bottle service to pair with succulent dishes like the Heritage Farms Pork Chop served with sautéed local oyster mushrooms and spätzle, demi-glace sauce, and pickled red cabbage.
