After reading about the F45 workout online, Rachel Sigler wanted in. There was just one problem: The high-intensity, functional training workout out of Australia didn’t exist in Nashville. When she contacted their corporate office to find out if they would be opening a Nashville location, they said nothing was in the works. Then they suggested she could be the one to change that. Sigler was looking for somewhere to work out, not for a fitness studio to buy. But she couldn’t shake the idea, so she started writing a business plan.
Now Sigler, a former nonprofit development director, is opening Nashville’s first F45 location inside the Eastside Heights apartment building in East Nashville.
F45—F for “functional training” and 45 for the number of minutes in each class—blends high-intensity interval training with circuit and training to torch upwards of 750 calories per 45-minute session. And with a database of over 4,000 movements and 36 different workouts, no two classes are ever the same.
“I can’t just run on a treadmill for an hour,” says Sigler. “I’m the kind of person who needs that change to keep it fresh and to keep me engaged.”

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are dedicated to cardio while Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays are for resistance training. Saturday classes, which often feature a live DJ, are a hybrid.
Each class is made up of a series of timed stations with exercises designed to mimic everyday movements, like pushing, pulling, and squatting. Each station also features a video demo to guide participants through each movement. Two trainers are on hand in every class to assist with form and provide motivation.
Because the workouts can be scaled up or down based on fitness level, a person new to exercise can feel just as at home as the elite athlete.
“The beauty of F45 is that everything can be modified,” says Sigler. “Our trainers can push people to go further and help modify [the movements.]”
Outside of the constantly changing and challenging workout, for Sigler, the best part of F45 is the community.
“The team training environment of F45 is really special. There’s no judgement, no egos, no mirrors,” she says. “It’s about community and encouragement.”
