HERB DAY 2024: HILDEGARD VON BINGEN - MAGICAL, MEDICINAL AND MORE
The Herb Society of Nashville, www.herbsocietysnashville.org, today announces plans for its annual Herb Day to be held on Saturday, September 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens in Nashville. Themed Hildegard von Bingen - Magical, Medicinal and More, the speaker’s program features keynote Arlene Haan’s delightful reenactment as Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th Century German abbess who authored two great books on herbal medicine and healing. Also presenting are birding enthusiast and naturalist, Stephen Lyn Bales and expert forager, Alan Powell. The full day event includes admission to the gardens, parking, continental breakfast, lunch, guest speakers, a tour of the herb garden at Cheekwood, and exhibits from local artisans.
The Power of Medicinal Herbs with Hildegard von Bingen
Keynote presenter, Arlene Haan, will portray twelfth century abbess, author and herbalist, “Hildegard” of Bingen, Germany. Garbed in period costume, Haan will take us back to medieval times to share the amazing healing power of plants and medicinal herbs. The talk will conclude with a tour of Cheekwood’s medicinal garden, a garden inspired, designed and maintained by volunteer members of the Herb Society of Nashville.
Bird Love: Courtship and Pair-Bonding
Did you know that roughly 90 percent of all bird species form male-female pair bonds to raise families? Some species only bond for a single clutch while others mate for life. But can we call it love? Join naturalist/author Stephen Lyn Bales for a lively presentation titled: Bird Love: Courtship and Pair-Bonding. Bales is an East Tennessee natural historian and the author of three books: Natural Histories, Ghost Birds and Ephemeral by Nature, all published by the University of Tennessee Press.
Foraging in Tennessee
Nashville expert forager, Alan Powell, will discuss principles of foraging, the life cycles of plants and when to harvest, and identification of edible and medicinal plants growing locally throughout the year.
This tasty, fun and informative day, hosted against Cheekwood’s beautiful backdrop, is a yearly favorite. Tickets are limited. Early bird pricing is $60 through August 9, and $65 beginning August 10.
