Although bourbon and Tennessee whiskey get most of the attention in these parts, rye whiskey is actually the base for many original versions of classic cocktails, including the Manhattan and the Old Fashioned. The spicy brown spirit has been experiencing a bit of a renaissance of late, gaining popularity among bartenders and appearing in home bars.
Lynchburg's Jack Daniel's is the oldest distillery in Tennessee, and Pennington Distilling Co. in Nashville is one of the newest, but both of them have chosen to feature rye whiskey as their latest releases. For Jack, this is the first new whiskey recipe in wide release from the distillery since the 19th century, while, at Pennington, their Davidson Reserve Rye is their debut product for the new spinoff from the already successful SPEAKeasy Spirits.
