Habitat Humanitarians and design stars Jonathan and Drew Scott (known as HGTV's Property Brothers) are in town supporting Habitat for Humanity's nationwide campaign, Home is the Key, which kicked off in Nashville on April 2. Hear about the brothers' involvement, as well as their Nashville go-tos, upcoming projects, and more.
Nashville Lifestyles (NL): What drew you to Nashville, or what is your connection here?
Jonathan: Nashville is honestly one of our favorite places in the country. Some of our best friends live here, and we're currently shooting Property Brothers here right now.
Drew: We've also hosted the CMA Music Festival for the past 5 years, which is always a blast. We absolutely love this city. From the first time we set foot in Nashville, people were welcoming us with open arms. You've never met a nicer bunch of people than in this city, which makes sense as to why it's the fastest growing city in the country.
NL: What's on your Nashville bucket list? Where are your favorite Nashville hangs?
Drew: Cheekwood's botanical gardens are beautifulespecially in the spring. I was able to visit last year with my family. Also, everywhere you look has amazing live music. There are so many talented artists in Nashville, and it's also fun to see new, up-and-coming musicians.
Jonathan: Speaking of music, the Country Museum Hall of Fame and Museum is a must! There is also a new magic-themed restaurant and entertainment space called House of Cards located below the Johnny Cash Museum that just opened in April. I may need to join them one day and try out some of my new tricks.
NL: Tell us about your involvement with Habitat for Humanity and their Home is the Key campaign.
Drew: We've been longtime volunteers and supporters of Habitat for Humanity, and we were honored to be named Habitat Humanitarians last November. It's very humbling to be given this honor and to join the other Habitat Humanitarians, President Jimmy Carter, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and our friends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
Jonathan: We're here in Nashville to support Habitat's Home is the Key campaign. This is the second year of the campaign, and the goal is to raise awareness of the growing affordable housing crisis in the U.S. and to really help people understand how they can help tackle this huge issue facing the country. Everyone deserves a safe, beautiful place to call home. A home is not just the studs and the walls, it's a place where memories are made and where a family can grow together.
Drew: As part of the campaign, we've teamed up with two future Habitat homeowners, Ashlee and Amanda, to help them build their homes here in Nashville. Both women are hardworking moms who want a better life for their families and the opportunity to own a home of their own. They both have been so great to work with and it's amazing to see their determination in building a better future for their kids.
NL: If you weren't in real estate, what would you be doing?
Drew: We would probably still be doing something in entertainment. Maybe write more music. We grew up in a musical household where every other night we were sitting around the campfire, strumming the guitar and singing.
Jonathan: We have two singles out now, ‘Hold On' and ‘Let the Night Shine In.' We really enjoyed writing these songs, recording and shooting the videos, all of it done right here in Nashville. It's been lot of fun, and it's something we want to keep doing.
NL: Any other projects we can tell readers about?
Jonathan: The big one is Drew and Linda's wedding, coming up in May.
Drew: Yeah, we're very excited about the wedding, which is going to be in Italy. It'll be a week of relaxation with all our friends and family.
Jonathan: We're also staying very busy with all our shows. We're filming season 13 of Property Brothers here in Nashville and also just launched our own digital lifestyle platform called GuruHub.
Drew: And we're going to keep up our work with Habitat for Humanity, too. Wherever we are, we always look for a way to work with Habitat. Whether it's by donating to or shopping at a Habitat ReStore, or volunteering at a Habitat build site, there are so many ways to help other people secure the dream of a safe place to call home.
