Andrew and Rachel Jackson have a love story for the ages.
Jackson met his bride while staying at her mother’s boarding house, but there was one slight inconvenience– Rachel was already married. Her first marriage, however, was far from a happy union. Full of jealousy and separations in the early 1790s, Rachel’s first husband began divorce proceedings.
Around that time, Andrew and Rachel made a trip to Natchez, Mississippi. Upon their return, the couple reported that they had married while there–despite no historical evidence found to support the claim. While Rachel’s first husband had filed for divorce years prior, he had not been granted one, so the Jacksons’ marriage was technically invalid. Following a bit of protest, Andrew and Rachel quietly remarried in Nashville in January 1794, in what could be seen as what we now call a vow renewal.
Rachel Jackson passed away from a heart problem on December 22, 1828 and was laid to rest on Christmas Eve. Andrew Jackson never remarried and according to the family, would walk to her grave every day as long as he was able to spend time remembering his beloved. The Jacksons were close to their families, brought in many children to take care of, and had a lifelong devotion to each other.
It was a love story worthy of remembrance, and so are your love stories.
