Behind the scenes of New York Fashion Week, teams of hairstylists swirl around models creating works of art in the form of hair. It takes a team to craft one immaculately perfected look, everyone implementing their own specialty while simultaneously working as a unit. That sense of community inspired hairstylist Jon Reyman to create Spoke and Weal Salons. And with their outpost in Green Hills, Nashvillians can experience luxurious specialized services for transformative beauty within that’s inspired by gorgeous hair.
As a renowned leader and educator in the hair industry, Reyman brought the technique of dry-cutting into the mainstream of modern haircutting practice, and serves as the creative force behind Spoke and Weal’s haircutting and styling programs. Throughout his extensive experience as a hairstylist for Fashion Weeks around the world, Reyman met Christine Thompson, a global guest artist to the hair industry’s leading brands and distinguished colorist. Together, with Reyman as the cut director and Thompson as the color director, the duo teamed up with business expert Elizabeth Norton to open Spoke and Weal Salons.
“[ Jon] always knew he wanted a salon in every major city. He wanted to make a big difference in the salon industry. He wanted to reach people and give them solutions to their hair that he believed he could deliver at a different level through dry-cutting and through a training program that provided consistency and professionalism,” says COO Elizabeth Norton. “He wanted a place where his peers and community work together in a team environment, much like the Fashion Week environment.”
With salon locations nationwide in cities such as NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston, opening a salon in Nashville felt like the perfect fit. “We seek to be a part of where we’re opening and build community through there. We’re attracted to that authenticity of Nashville and the community and we thought we could build our own community within the city,” Norton says. For the Spoke and Weal team, that sense of community starts within the salon. Known for dry cutting and custom dimensional hair color using natural, responsibly sourced plant-based products, the full-service salons offer an array of specialized, highly technical services to meet the needs of every guest. With each stylist honing their area of expertise, Spoke and Weal’s specialized service approach fosters an elite level of technique in a team-based environment.
“A lot of places you have hairdressers doing the cut, color, everything. For us, the ability to focus on one specific thing creates a technical level that is beyond a generalist level. Many people come in for both a cut and color and they’re seeing multiple service providers, so we have to work as a team. We have to communicate and flow together really well, so we have a whole program around communication and resolution,” Norton explains. “I think people like the experience of being a part of it and that’s important to us.”
Through a rigorous training program, high-quality products, and a commitment to guest service Spoke and Weal aims to help guests love their hair for life. “Our biggest hope for our guests would truly be to solve problems and enable people to feel like they have options, and that they can do their hair and love their hair. We don’t want people’s hair to be an issue, or a struggle, or just something that doesn’t matter to them because we think it’s important and we want to celebrate that,” says Norton. And for the team at Spoke and Weal, beauty comes from within. The team recognizes the impact hair can have on confidence and strives to provide a salon experience that not only transforms a client’s hair, but ultimately their life. “I see folks walk in and they look normal, just dropped the kids off at school or whatever, and when they walk out it would be like they were two inches taller, their smiles were different, there was this sense of transformation that was being revealed,” Norton says. “That’s kind of this ability for a beauty service provider to support the process of someone feeling more confident, more at ease, satisfied and happy.” (3990 Hillsboro Pike, STE. 230, 615-982-1653, spokeandweal.com)
