Stephen Webster, a British-born fine-jewelry designer who worked alongside Machine Gun Kelly to craft a bespoke engagement ring for Megan Fox, is bringing his Thorn Embrace Collection and Thorn Addiction Collection to Diamond Cellar.
The engagement ring, which is part of the Thorn Embrace Collection, features both Megan's and MGK's birthstones and is an intricate and personal design with two interlocking thorn bands embedded together with hidden magnets.
Diamond Cellar will be the first store in the United States to showcase the Thorn Addiction Collection, which is made for anyone ready to embrace their inner punk.
Join Diamond Cellar on June 14 and 15 to get an exclusive look at an expanded selection of jewelry including new styles from both the Thorn Addiction & Thorn Embrace Collections. See our Q & A with the designer below:
How did you get your start in the jewelry industry?
I left school at the age of sixteen to start my journey studying jewelry design at Medway College of Design, Rochester, part of the Kent Institute of Art & Design. My fondest memories really are the excitement of being in a workshop, with the noises, smells, and flames. Everything felt quite brutal and industrial. The processes progressed of people working on what looked like treasure which to me and this way of making a living was phenomenal.
How would you describe the style of the jewelry you design?
It’s difficult to say there is an exact style, but it is a combination of all the things we believe in which includes our sustainability, creativity, craftsmanship, and our excitement that we provide as jewelers. So, in the end what you make is jewelry conversation pieces.
Let’s talk about the Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox engagement ring! What did the process of creating that with MGK look like?
Colson Baker (Machine Gun Kelly) first contacted me to commission a ring because he had seen a collection we had produced more than a dozen years previously: The Seven Deadly Sins. He wanted something completely unique and 100 percent connected to Megan and himself. So, it was down to me to extract personal things from him and put that into a design. You want to feel if you are going to give, or receive, a ring that holds a lot of emotions, and it has to be something that feels connected to one or both parties. In this case we were able to establish where they feel they are connected and represent that with their two birthstones.
What makes their engagement ring different and what are its unique elements?
During the creative process Colson had mentioned that Megan’s birth stone is emerald which he wanted to incorporate in some way, along with a diamond, his birth stone. The resulting ring actually consists of two rings which by the use of magnets buried within the gold, are attracted to each other and sit together perfectly on the finger, a detail that is both modern and quite extraordinary.
What types of materials are used in the ring?
The design features two interlocking thorn bands, each side holding one of the two pear shape gems. Created in 18-carat white gold, pavé set with colorless natural diamonds and the pair of perfectly matched pear-shaped gems. The diamond is a D-color antique cut and the emerald is an extraordinary (completely) untreated Colombian gem.
You are bringing the Thorn Addiction Collection to Diamond Cellar, what is your inspiration behind that collection? What about the Thorn Embrace collection?
The Thorn motif was originally inspired by tattoo art that I explored in Rio some twenty-five years ago, and can now be seen across various Stephen Webster collections, including both jewelry and homeware. The Thorn design has to be one of my personal favorites; always unisex with an unquestionable edge. Thorn Embrace really takes it to a new level of desirability with the collection depicting Hollywood glamour and an exciting color palette of stones. Adding the latest Webster twist of innovation and technology, Thorn Embrace also features a magnetic mechanism embedded in the setting, allowing the stones to be ‘embraced together.'
