Andrew Newton's ALIVE
Following the 2024 Kindling Arts Festival, this hilarious and moving new play from a thrilling new theatrical voice, ALIVE is a dark comedy that tackles queer identity, depression, and loneliness through the lens of magical realism. This irreverent and ultimately heartwarming debut play from Andrew Newton is about growing the courage to persevere and thrive despite mental illness.
Bobby’s quirky gang of houseplants is in trouble. Hopeless to change their fate, they are slowly dying after being moved into a dark apartment. Bobby is in trouble too, facing eviction and struggling with depression in the midst of a messy breakup. In a drug-induced fever dream, Bobby and his plants discover that they can mysteriously talk to one another. Will their budding companionship spur Bobby to battle his inner demons, save the plants, and discover a life worth living?
Helmed by dynamic director Madeleine Hicks and featuring an all-star cast of hilarious local performers portraying the lively, opinionated bunch of houseplants that surround Bobby, ALIVE reminds us of the ways caring for one another can help us survive.
This performance is presented August 1-3 at the Darkhorse Theater as a "post-script" to Kindling Arts Festival 2024 (July 18-21). Festival Passholders receive complimentary admission with their pass, but tickets must be booked in advance.
