We’ve been astonished by our city’s nonstop growth and spate of newcomers to our dining scene. Moreover, we’ve been blown away by the irrepressible spirit of our long-standing chefs and restaurateurs who have dug in, gotten creative, and adapted so they can continue to serve delicious food and drink to us hungry diners. For this year’s Restaurant Issue, there are no bests. For anyone still in the business and doing the work, that’s a best, in and of itself. Salud!
We’ve looked back over the past year or two and assembled some favorites, including these spots from a mini road trip.
ROSIE FOOD & WINE
Chefs Andy Hayes and Beth Owens have created a superb dining spot in Hendersonville that showcases their multi-talents. Drawing on Spanish and Italian influences, Hayes’s food makes memories. Think Pimenton-lashed grilled octopus over potato puree or ricotta-filled ravioli with ramp pesto. Owens makes refined yet homey desserts and has assembled a wine program of vintages both compelling and affordable, making this well-rounded resto a perfect example of destination dining. PRIMROSE TABLE
The arrival of more independent restaurants has enlivened Murfreesboro’s culinary scene. In 2019, Chef Jason Matheson and his wife, Nevada, launched Primrose Table: approachable fine dining featuring globally-inspired comfort foods. The char-grilled lamb chops with crispy eggplant and labneh or tempura pork in sweet-sour sauce are not to be missed. And the bar offers up a fine selection of fine bourbons, so be sure to call shotgun for this road trip. (1650 Memorial Blvd., 615-900-5790; primrosetable.com)
1892
A cruise along the dips and bends of scenic Highway 46 is reason enough to make the trip to Leiper’s Fork. The charm of this little enclave filled with antique shops and art galleries is all the more reason. But dinner at 1892 is the best reason. Experience Chef Dylan Morrison’s modern farm-to-table cuisine hospitably served in the rustic elegance of the circa 1892 home. It’s a charming experience that will make you feel far from Nashville yet right at home. (4150 Old Hillsboro Rd., 615-614-3964; 1892leipersfork.com)
