In theory, the DIY movement should be fun. In reality, not always.
Artsy types might find them entertaining and therapeutic, but many are left feeling frustrated by the fact that their project looks nothing like the Pinterest version. Whether you identify with the former or the latter, both Mary Hong Gallery and AR Workshop welcome you with open arms.
Mary Hong Gallery
Mary Hong says it doesn’t take long for people to fall in love with her signature art technique called ShardWorx, which has been a crowd favorite since she developed it in 2006. After receiving an overwhelming amount of interest, Hong decided to share her expert tips and tricks by offering DIY-style classes at her art galleries in Destin, Grayton, New Orleans, and most recently, Nashville. To create ShardWorx, glass shards are meticulously placed onto a painted canvas, then covered with a layer of resin, and blasted with a heat gun. After the materials set and mold together, the final product resembles mosaic artwork, but with an innovative twist. Hong, who teaches every class herself, also pre-paints all the canvases, making for a hassle-free experience, enjoyable for both beginners and experts.

AR Workshop
With 81 successful storefronts across the country, it’s safe to say this DIY franchise knows a thing or two about crafting. The AR Workshop formula ensures that each customer—regardless of his or her skill level—leaves with personalized, professional-looking décor. So, what’s the secret? Stencils. An easy-to-follow, step-by-step online registration allows customers to plug in specific project details, which are then carved into stencils by an AR Workshop employee before the start of each class. Custom lettering styles, initials, and family names are just a few of the pre-selected options that allow for personalized versions of home décor items, like framed wood signs, canvas pillows, centerpieces, and Lazy Susans. The only thing you’re responsible for is choosing a color scheme and painting inside the lines. Plus, all shops are BYOB and snack-friendly, making AR Workshop a solid option for get togethers.
