Named for a brightly colored flower that grows in the Southwest, the newly opened Castilleja boutique in Edgehill Village brings modern bohemian vibes with Texas flair to Nashville. The vibrant lifestyle and home décor store is owned by Grammy-winning songwriter (and Texas native) Liz Rose and her daughter, Hayley Rose Maurer.
Since relocating to Nashville 20 years ago, Rose says she's always felt it needed a 'Texas” store for everyone who's homesick for the Lone Star State. And though this her first retail experience with her daughter, they were quick to jump on the same page when it came to stocking the shopthey both wanted a free-spirited Southwestern aesthetic with tons of color, culture, and comfort.
'Even on our first buying trip, people commented on how fast we were and that we must have been doing this for a long time,” laughs Maurer. 'We've always been close, and we've definitely had a lot of experience shopping. And there's a good balancewe rein each other in and push each other accordingly.”
The store is thoughtfully cultivated with a broad mixture of high-end and affordable pieces. There's faded, soft flannels next to delicate jewelry, quirky greeting cards, and a corner full of unique children's goods. One of Rose and Maurer's favorite items is a collection of vintage Bolivian frazadas. Crafted from sheep's wool, the bold patterned textiles can be used as blankets or rugs. In a basket nearby is an assortment of traditional Mexican blankets; Rose personally soaks, washes, and softens each one before it hits the sales floor. Throughout the years, she has also collected serapeslong, blanket-like shawls traditionally worn in Mexicowhich, with the help of neighboring store Ani & Ari, have been turned into brilliant pillows.
There are lines from all over the world, in fact: Meyelo canvas bags, Sew Heart Felt rugs and slippers, Little Golden Books, Cowboysbelt leather goods, Inouitoosh scarves, and Apotheke candles. There are also local brands like Pop-In-Greetings and fashionABLE scarves and leather products. "It's been well received,” says Rose. 'It's fun when people come in and say they love the store and there's nothing like this in Nashville. Or when they say it's like walking into my house. That's the whole pointthey can pick things up and carry them around and sit on the couch. We want that small-business feel.”
Rose continues to write songs five days a week, stopping by the store daily and working on the weekends while Maurer runs the day-to-day operations. 'I love seeing people walk out with something they love,” Maurer says. 'Even if they don't, just having them say ‘I love this store, I just want to hang out in here' is great.”
