LaDonna Boyd
Our annual list of trailblazing women are creating lasting legacies for themselves and for the city of Nashville. Now they’re sharing their stories, their triumphs, their setbacks, and their advice with us. Prepare to be inspired.
Early Aspirations
My journey has been very different than most. I currently serve as the fifth-generation President/ CEO of the R.H. Boyd family of companies. The story begins with my great-great grandfather, Dr. Richard Henry Boyd. He founded what is now known as R.H. Boyd Publishing Corp. in 1896 here in Nashville to provide news, educational resources, music, literature, and ministry guides to the Black community, both locally and nationally. 125 years later, our family of companies is still leading the charge. I grew up learning the business alongside my father, Dr. T. B. Boyd III, and I prepared for a leadership role through real- life experience, mentors, and formal education (Bachelor’s degree in Economics, MBA in Finance, and Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership).
Challenges Faced
There are always challenges that come with leadership, especially in a fifth-generation business. But we must keep up with, or preferably stay ahead of, the times while maintaining the core of our mission. There have been major transitions in technology, procurement, distribution, etc. over that past century, and we have always persevered.
The Definition of Success
To me, success is defined by freedom—freedom to control your time, resources, and energy.
Advice for Others
I would tell all young women to make sure that they prioritize their personal lives, pay close attention to their mental and physical health, and truly seek inner peace rather than just titles, degrees, and money. Having resources to provide sustenance is very important, but do not overlook true happiness and what your life will look like down the road. We must curate that life that we want, and every step along the journey has either consequences or rewards.
