Our annual list of trailblazing women are creating lasting legacies for themselves and for the city of Nashville. Now they’re sharing their stories, their triumphs, their setbacks, and their advice with us. Prepare to be inspired.
Early Aspirations
I have always been extremely independent, and I think a natural leader from a young age. I don’t think the adult me is that far off from the take-charge personality I had even when I was little! I have always liked to work and do my own thing. When I was in high school, I would actually cut class to pick up shifts at work. (Sorry, mom!) I didn’t set out to have a career in the hospitality industry; I always thought I would go to law school. After high school, it turned out I liked managing bars a lot more than I liked going to class, so when leadership opportunities came my way, I jumped on it. My passion for food and wine has always been there, but it really came out when I had the opportunity to work in restaurants like mk in Chicago in my early 20s.
The Definition of Success
Peace and balance. I know I’m doing well when I have peace and my job isn’t dominating every aspect of my life.
Work Perks
First and foremost I truly love my team at Nicky’s. We have an amazing crew that works so hard, cares about the business so much, and are truly just a pleasure to be around. Besides that, there is so much joy in a good meal. I think we saw that in 2020 especially, and I’m grateful I get to work in a business that provides that comfort to people. I’m also glad to be a part of the hospitality community at a time when important conversations are happening around inclusivity and creating a better work environment than the one we came up in. I have so many inspiring peers who are at the forefront of creating those cultural shifts. I’m lucky to be able to learn and share ideas with them. It’s an exciting time for restaurants as we move towards a different kind of future.
The Nashville Connection
I owe so much to Nashville. [Husband and business partner] Tony and I are transplants via Chicago, but felt truly welcomed from day one. Living here has afforded us opportunities we wouldn’t have had in other cities, and the community has been so supportive of our endeavors.
Advice to Others
Be your own biggest fan. No one will be an advocate for you and what you’re capable of better than yourself. I think as women we tend to minimize and be modest, but don’t be afraid to let people know how fantastic you are and that you’re the best person for the job.
