Occupation: Chief Public Defender, Nashville Defender’s Office.
Hometown: Nashville, TN
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Being elected Nashville’s Chief Public Defender will always be my proudest accomplishment — not only because I made history, but because I had to step out on faith and push past my own fear to even run. It allows me to stand up to injustice every day while building a legacy my children can be proud of. I want them to know that courage matters, ceilings can be shattered, and using your voice for others can change the world.
What organization are you affiliated with and why is it important to you?
I’m proud to partner with the Davidson County Youth Court and the Whites Creek High School Law Academy. I went to Whites Creek, grew up in the same neighborhoods, and know firsthand how powerful it is for students to see someone who’s walked their path and gone on to lead in this city. I show up to remind them that they can be anything they put their mind to, and to offer tangible support, mentorship, and encouragement on their journey. But the truth is, I get just as much in return. Their energy, curiosity, and determination inspire me, keep me grounded in my purpose, and remind me why this work matters.
A quote you live by:
“The time is always right to do what’s right.” —Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This quote is a reminder that doing the right thing can’t wait for the perfect moment or ideal circumstances. Whether in the courtroom or in everyday life, we always have the opportunity (and the responsibility) to act with integrity and stand up for what’s right.
