The Compost Company, a locally founded leader in sustainable waste diversion and soil health solutions, celebrated the grand opening of its new The Compost Co. Supply retail location in Antioch on Saturday, March 28. The community event, held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., featured a ribbon cutting, remarks from local leaders, special promotions, and family-friendly activities with food and refreshments.
Founded in 2012 by COO Edward Wansing, The Compost Company has played a pioneering role in advancing composting and sustainable waste management across Middle Tennessee. The company operates a compost processing and drop-off facility in Ashland City, where residential and commercial food scraps are transformed into nutrient-rich compost that supports local agriculture, landscaping, and gardening.
The new Antioch retail location marked a significant milestone in the company’s growth and its ongoing mission to make composting and soil health products more accessible to residents and businesses throughout Davidson County. The expansion allows customers to conveniently purchase compost, soil blends, mulch, and other sustainable landscaping products while learning more about responsible waste diversion practices.
The company’s growth has been reflected not only in new locations, but in measurable environmental impact across the region. In 2025, the total recorded impact of composting reached 10,669.2 tons — or more than 21 million pounds — of waste diverted from landfills, highlighting both widespread community participation and the effectiveness of local composting programs.
“In 2025 alone, our composting efforts helped divert more than 10,669 tons, over 21 million pounds of material from local landfills,” said Clay Ezell, co-owner of The Compost Company. “That level of impact reflects the trust our community has placed in us and reinforces our commitment to expanding access to composting services that protect our environment and strengthen local soil health. Opening our Antioch location allows us to better serve Davidson County while continuing to grow sustainable solutions for the future.”
The Compost Company has built strong partnerships throughout Middle Tennessee, working closely with Metro Nashville Public Schools, Metro departments, and local organizations to reduce landfill waste and promote environmental stewardship. The company has also served as a key partner in Metro’s Food Scraps Pickup Pilot, helping divert organic waste from landfills and turn it into valuable resources for the community.
In recognition of their leadership in sustainability and local food systems, The Compost Company’s co‑owners were appointed by Mayor Freddie O’Connell to serve on both the Agricultural Extension Board and the Sustainability Advisory Committee, where they contribute expertise to policies and programs that strengthen Nashville’s environmental future.
“We strongly believe that business success and civic responsibility go hand in hand,” said Jeffrey Ezell, co-owner of The Compost Company. “Our appointments by Mayor Freddie O’Connell to serve on the Agricultural Extension Board and the Sustainability Advisory Committee reflect our commitment to helping shape long-term environmental solutions for Nashville and ensuring our community continues to lead in responsible waste management and sustainability.”
Today, The Compost Company’s impact extends across the hospitality, corporate, education, and sports sectors, serving partners ranging from locally owned establishments such as Henrietta Red, Mitchell’s Delicatessen, and The Nashville Food Project, to institutions like Vanderbilt University, global brands including 1 Hotel, Whole Foods Market, Starbucks, and Google, and major regional organizations such as the Tennessee Titans, Nashville SC, and the Nashville Predators. Large-scale venues, including Music City Center, further demonstrate the scalability of composting solutions across diverse industries.
The Antioch grand opening welcomed elected officials, community partners, and residents in a shared celebration of local investment, environmental responsibility, and practical, community-driven solutions for waste reduction and soil health.
