In literature, a person's story is often told through vignettesshort, descriptive sketches where characters can grow to be better understood. When Lisa McHugh decided to open a store in 2010, she named it Vignette; her vision was to provide uniquely sourced goods that would become a part of the bigger story of her customers' lives. Her hopes have since been realized, and the Brentwood boutique recently underwent a massive expansion.
'We went from shabby chic to a Scandinavian look,” McHugh explains. 'There's a lot of white, open, clean, raw space. It's been a huge change.”
McHugh's talent is clearthe eye-catching displays alone are works of art. The 5,000-square-foot space is sectioned into four shopping experiences: jewelry, clothing, home goods, and an art gallery complete with a large birdcage filled with live finches. On offer are local items like jewelry by Modern Bronze, Cloverpost, Karibeth, and Red Earth as well as imports like an ottoman covered in a vintage Oushak rug from Turkey and an antique flip board from Belgium.
McHugh says she goes to great efforts to find as many one-of-a-kind pieces as she canespecially ones that are filled with positive energy. (Customers have told her that just stopping by puts them in a better mood.) In addition to the clean, simple aesthetic, Vignette also offers items within a range of budgets and tastes.
'It's not unusual for moms, daughters, and grandmothers to come shopping together, and they each leave with something special. The guys like us, too,” she says with a smile. 'Whether [customers are] buying something for their home or the people they love, we have a very broad appeal.”
