Depending on your level of organization, closets can often times be stressful, hectic, and messy places in our home. In an effort to create a more enjoyable space (and of course make room for new spring fashions), the Nashville-based online boutique, Gumption is sharing steps for a successful closet cleanout.
Not only is this an opportunity for you to get organized, but it is also a way to donate and give back to those in need especially during this tough financial time. In addition, Gumption will be giving everyone who participates in this closet clean-out a $10 gift card to shop their site, where you'll find a variety of sustainable, ethically-made, and purpose-driven clothing pieces.
Read on for Gumption's six steps for a successful closet cleanout:
Step 1: Assess Your Space
For some of us, clothes are scattered all throughout our closet (and perhaps even outside our closet as well). Look at your space and assess what you are working with.
Step 2: Take Everything Out—Yes, We Mean Everything
From winter jackets and t-shirts to pajamas and shoes, take everything out of your closet. It is helpful to see all that you have in one place, so go ahead and pull it all out!
Step 3: Answer The Hard Questions
1. Have I worn this in the last six months?
2. Can I make multiple outfits out of this piece?
3. Does this piece make me feel confident?
Step 4: Determine Which Pieces Don't Make the Cut
After asking yourself the tough questions, make a pile of the items that no longer serve a purpose in your wardrobe. Then, evaluate the items that did not make the cut. If the particular article of clothing is still in good condition, donate it! All other items that are falling apart should be recycled.
Note: Please choose to responsibly recycle
Step 5: Reorganize
Put all the items back into your closet and drawers in an orderly fashion so you can finally enjoy your closet space. There are a variety of ways to organize your space to make it functional and stress-free. Some ideas include organizing by color, season, and/or length of the piece.
Step 6: Donate + Share Your Story
Box up the clothes you have chosen to donate and bring them to a great charity that will put them to good use. Take a photo of your donated items and/or of your closet cleanout process and tag @shopgumption on Instagram using the hashtag #SHOPGUMPTION to receive a $10 credit to shop Gumption's website!
