Each spring in Nashville, a familiar ritual unfolds across the rolling hills of Percy Warner Park. Tailgating tents rise at dawn, wide-brim hats appear by the thousands and the thunder of hooves signals the return of one of the city’s most cherished traditions. On Saturday, May 9, the Iroquois Steeplechase will celebrate its 85th Anniversary — marking more than eight decades of sport, style and community.
Often referred to as Nashville’s “Rite of Spring,” the Iroquois Steeplechase has long blended world-class steeplechase racing with Southern hospitality, fashion, and philanthropy. Each year, more than 30,000 spectators gather for a day that feels equal parts sporting event and social celebration. From elegant hospitality lounges to lively tailgates spread across the hillside, the atmosphere is as much about gathering with friends as it is about the races themselves.
This milestone year brings new experiences while preserving the traditions that have defined the event for generations.
The Experience: What’s New in 2026
Whether you prefer the energy of tailgating with friends or the comfort of premium hospitality, the Iroquois Steeplechase offers a wide range of ways to experience race day.
One of the newest additions for 2026 is a partnership with iHeartRadio Nashville, bringing live music to The Big 98 Stage in Centerfield throughout the day until 7 p.m. Performances from some of Nashville’s top emerging artists will add a distinctly Music City soundtrack to the festivities, blending the excitement of horse racing with the city’s legendary music scene.
For those seeking a more curated
Magnolia Garden (formerly known as Hunt Club) has been reimagined as a shared hospitality space offering an elevated yet relaxed environment. Guests enjoy gourmet catering, full beverage service and guaranteed seating, all set against sweeping trackside views. Located on a prime hillside overlooking the course, Magnolia Garden combines comfort and sophistication with the energy of the crowd below.
Royal 615, long known as one of the liveliest spots on the grounds, returns with expanded lounge seating for 2026. Often described as Nashville’s hottest party at the races, Royal 615 features DJ entertainment, exclusive trackside views and a vibrant VIP lounge atmosphere where STK Steakhouse will be catering for VIP guests. Patrons can relax in style making it an ideal destination for those who want a high-energy social experience alongside the racing action as the party continues through the evening until 7 p.m.
Tailgating Traditions, Vendors and More
For many longtime attendees, tailgating remains the heart of Steeplechase. Groups of friends, families, and colleagues transform designated spaces into elaborate race-day setups complete with themed décor, catered spreads and festive drinks.
Six unique tailgating areas are available across the grounds, each offering space for one vehicle and a 10x10 pop-up tent. Guests can enhance their setup by adding a Tent Package that includes a tent, table and chairs, creating an easy turnkey option for first-time tailgaters.
The event also offers a dedicated Family Area designed for guests attending with children. Kids ages 12 and under receive complimentary entry to the tailgating area when accompanied by a supervising adult, making the Steeplechase an accessible and memorable experience for families as well.
Visitors who prefer to explore the event without reserving a tailgating space can purchase individual tickets, which provide access to Steeplechase Central, the Hillside Shoppes, food trucks and the tailgating areas throughout the grounds.
Wi-Fi will be available in Steeplechase Central to help guests stay connected during the event. However, because cell service can be limited within the park, attendees are encouraged to plan meeting points and communications in advance.
Guests should also note that the event maintains several policies designed to ensure safety and comfort for all attendees. The Iroquois Steeplechase is a pet-free, glass-free, and drone-free event.
Style on the Hillside
Fashion has always been part of the Steeplechase tradition. Race-day style reflects the heritage of the event — elevated Southern spring attire that feels polished yet practical for a full day outdoors.
For Women: Lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton, eyelet, and breathable blends are ideal choices for Nashville’s spring weather. Pastels, florals, and soft seasonal tones remain timeless favorites, though bold colors can be equally striking when tailored with sophistication. Wide-brim hats and fascinators remain a signature element of Steeplechase style, though statement accessories and polished hairstyles offer modern alternatives. Footwear should be suitable for grassy terrain, with wedges, block heels, elegant flats, or stylish boots providing both comfort and stability.
For Men: The overall look is refined but not overly formal. Lightweight sport coats or blazers paired with collared shirts and tailored trousers strike the right balance between polished and relaxed. Ties are optional, though commonly seen in premium hospitality areas. Loafers or dress shoes with sturdy soles are recommended for navigating the park’s rolling hills.
No matter the outfit, race-day essentials should include sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection, along with bottled water to stay hydrated. And of course, a phone or camera is a must for capturing the colorful scenes that unfold across the grounds.
The Schedule: A Full Day of Racing and Tradition
Race-day festivities begin early, with tailgating opening at 8:30 a.m., while the Box Seats, Paddock Club, Magnolia Garden, Royal 615 and Railside Tents open at 10:30 a.m. As guests settle in across the hillsides, anticipation builds for the official opening ceremonies at noon. The afternoon will feature six races showcasing the remarkable athleticism of both horse and rider. Between races, spectators can enjoy several beloved Steeplechase traditions, including the Style Contest, the Tailgating Contest, the always delightful Stick Pony Races for children, and the crowd-favorite Parade of Hounds.
Together, these moments create a rhythm to the day, one that balances thrilling competition with lighthearted celebration.
The final race is expected to conclude in the late afternoon, with hospitality tents closing approximately 15 minutes afterward, around 5:30 p.m. with Royal 615 and The Big 98 Stage closing at 7 p.m.
Dining, Shopping, and Race-Day Finds
Throughout the grounds, guests will find an array of food trucks, local vendors and shopping opportunities. The Steeplechase Central and Hillside Shoppes areas offer everything from quick snacks and sweet treats to more substantial meals, ensuring that racegoers have plenty of dining options throughout the day.
