Join us during the May 10 Art Crawl for the Opening Reception of Spectacle, an exhibition curated by Mouminatou Thiaw and Mac Cooper that presents the work of two artists Sean Heiser and Alexis Jones, who use a closeness with the outer world to somatically connect with their inner selves. Through June 14. Spectacle showcases the abstract paintings of Sean Heiser and the mixed-media woodwork of Alexis Jones.
Through the abstraction of the sky, clouds, plants, earth, or wood, the artists use these natural elements to embrace their own radical contentment and interpersonal growth. While alluding to a spectator’s subjective presence, the artworks demonstrate the earth’s fragile, yet beautiful qualities and the untenable social ecosystems that rest within it.
This exhibition offers the community an opportunity to sit in stillness and value the slower cycles of the natural world, like clouds floating through the sky, or the wind slowly shaping canyons. As technology and fear equip an increasingly individualistic society to remain inwardly focused, Spectacle channels our attention and admiration through a push and pull, looking between self and sky. This exhibition disrupts the self-focused, static mind with a spectacle far greater than any man-made objects one may fixate on.
Ultimately, Spectacle offers an opportunity for viewers to witness how Sean Heiser and Alexis Jones transform introspection into new, shared windows for collective spectatorship.
Join us at 5:00 PM for our Artist Talk & Walk as our other Artists in Residence discuss their work, their work process, inspiration and much more.
