Dan Penn’s first songwriting success was Conway Twitty’s 1960 Top Forty hit “Is a Blue Bird Blue.”
He also wrote the pop and soul classics “Cry Like a Baby” (Box Tops), “Dark End of the Street,” (James Carr), “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” (Aretha Franklin), “I’m Your Puppet,” (James & Bobby Purify), “It Tears Me Up” and “Out of Left Field” (Percy Sledge), and “Sweet Inspiration” (Sweet Inspirations). The Flying Burrito Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lee Roy Parnell, Charlie Rich, and Yola have recorded Penn’s songs. Penn releases his latest album, Living on Mercy, on August 28.
