Boyz II Men
Boyz II Men will perform their catalog of hits (along with some Motown favorites) to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center on Sunday, October 6, for a show that’s sure to have the entire crowd singing along.
From “Motownphilly” to “I’ll Make Love to You,” Boyz II Men redefined ‘90s R&B with their smooth harmonies. We had the chance to talk to the trio—Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris, and Shawn Stockman—before their arrival in Nashville.
Nashville Lifestyles: You have been performing around Nashville quite a bit lately (CMT’s Crossroads, the Grand Ole Opry’s Salute to Ray Charles), what is it that brings you back to music city again and again?
Boyz II Men: The people, the food, and of course, the music. We really loved collaborating with Brett Young for Crossroads.
NL: With a decades-long career you often play songs you released years ago. How does playing them in a symphony hall change the show for you? And while you’re not playing with the Nashville Symphony this time, you’ve played with them before. What is it like to be backed by a full symphony?
Boyz II Men: We like the ability to just sing. When we do the regular stage performance, you’ve got to vocally fight against the drummer and samples and audiences screaming. There’s chaotic moments when you have to fight to stay above. On these shows, we can do whatever we want. We reach for the songs we believe sound better with those types of arrangements.
Nathan Morris: We’ve been doing those symphony shows for five years now, and it’s one of our favorite types of shows to do. Every time is different, and it’s all about the musicians. Every symphony has their own thing, their own feel. With the symphonies, we can sit back in the pocket and what’s around you, sing in a more comfortable pocket.
NL: Do you have any favorite places to visit in Nashville?
NM: The Opry, and we love checking out the spots on Broadway.
NL: What else are you looking forward to?
Boyz II Men: We have had our Vegas residency at The Mirage since 2013. We just collaborated with Steep Canyon Rangers on "Be Still Moses,” and filmed a cameo for Schooled on ABC.
Boyz II Men will perform at Schermerhorn Symphony Center this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available here.
