“I wanted it to feel like it's my room, my touch, with things I love from Texas and Nashville, x93 says the Grammy Award winner and owner of Music Row publishing house Liz Rose Music. “It's a little messy but that's good for me. I love all my old vinyl records. Sometimes we have vinyl parties and just pull an album and play a favorite song! x93
Rose, who co-wrote such hits as Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush x93 and Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me, x93 designed the space herself, and it’s the only room in the house not painted white; she was going for a “comfort homey feel with old and new photos. x93 The walls and shelves read like a timeline of her career, with memorabilia and platinum albums filling every empty space.
“I'm so proud of the Taylor plaques. They're so pretty! I also recently added a new Little Big Town plaque for ‘Girl Crush,’ x93 she shares. “The Love Junkies—me, Lori McKenna, and Hillary Lindsey—write a lot of our songs here, and the keyboard was given to me by Jody Williams. Taylor and I wrote ‘Teardrops On My Guitar’ and many others on it. x93
Liz Rose
Liz Rose’s Edgehill Village shop, Castilleja, has a very colorful and distinct flair that carries over into her at-home writing room. The Texas native sourced a few pieces like the blue desk and vintage Bolivian frasada from the home décor store she co-owns with her daughter, and her original writing room sofa now has a permanent home in the boutique.“I wanted it to feel like it's my room, my touch, with things I love from Texas and Nashville, x93 says the Grammy Award winner and owner of Music Row publishing house Liz Rose Music. “It's a little messy but that's good for me. “We love the back house, x93 Annie said. “Dave works out there every day, so he’s still available if I’m desperate [with the kids]. x93
Rich brown leathers, rustic accents, and a colorful geometric rug lend Dave’s studio an aesthetic that’s simultaneously modern and masculine. Family photos, Hatch Print posters, and plaques commemorating his songs recorded by Billy Currington and Blake Shelton line the wooden shelving, which was locally sourced and custom built in their living room.
“Knowing it’s from Tennessee, it feels special because you know what you’re getting is unique to the house, x93 Dave said.
Dave Barnes
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Dave Barnes and his wife, Annie, take great pride in their backyard studio/guest house that sits behind their home in 12 South. Together with builder Linus Catignani, architect Van Pond, and designer Lindsay Rhodes, the Barnes custom-designed the space to fit Dave’s songwriting needs and the couple’s penchant for hospitality.“We love the back house, x93 Annie said. “Dave works out there every day, so he’s still available if I’m desperate [with the kids]. x93

"This room, situated by the front door, was originally the dining room, and we had a piano, not a dining room table. For us, it made much more sense to have a musical space as the welcome message, x93 the singer-songwriter says of his front parlor room. “The art is mostly a mix of interesting instruments, a vintage piece from my granddaddy, and a poster made to raise funds for musicians affected by Katrina. I was the hand model and I guess you call that foreshadowing. This space becomes ‘The Pickin’ Parlor’ when we throw our annual party, and it’s always a one-of-a kind show. We love it. x93
Since relocating, Robbie has launched her own label, Kind of Blue Music, which is run mostly out of their home. The lower level (not pictured) houses the recording studio, lounge, gym, storage, and office space for the label and Keb’ Mo’ Music.
Keb’ Mo’
Three-time Grammy-winning blues and Americana artist Kevin “Keb’ Mo’ x93 Moore had spent nearly 60 years in Los Angeles until he and wife Robbie Brooks Moore relocated to Tennessee three days before the flood of 2010. While their spacious, new home, built in 2005 and perched on a hill in Franklin, went untouched, most of Kevin’s instruments—which were stored at Soundcheck Nashville on the banks of the Cumberland—did not."This room, situated by the front door, was originally the dining room, and we had a piano, not a dining room table. “The bedroom that became Chaney's writing room had the prettiest light in the entire house. I wanted to take advantage of that by painting the walls a more dramatic color than I would normally use, x93 the owner of Kendall Simmons Interiors says of her decision to implement Sherwin Williams Rainstorm in the space. “Chaney needed a comfortable place for she and Bree to retreat to and write, as well as a practical desk area to work from. Once those two functional needs were handled, the rest was a matter of incorporating their Emerald Blue concert posters and other music memorabilia. The room is a mix of vintage finds and new pieces, which lends it a comfortable, collected feeling. x93
Emerald Blue

“What I absolutely love about this home studio is, in fact, how it sounds. It’s an amazing feeling to walk in this historical home and be able to track all over the house, x93 says Smith, who released three full-length projects in 2014 alone.
The singer even uses the closets as sound booths. While framed photos of Smith with everyone from George W. Bush to Bono line the halls, with the exception of a few modern kitchen updates, the original character and antiquity of the house remain intact.
“It has every welcoming quality of a true home, x93 he adds. “It truly allows you to sit back [and] get inspiration for whatever you are working on. x93
