People often assume that a kitchen must be entirely remodeled to increase the value of your home.
However, minor upgrades like resurfacing cabinets and replacing appliances are still sound investments. The RE/MAX Homes and Estates, Lipman Group is back this month to share their favorite on-trend DIY kitchen upgrades that will add soul to your space. Before investing significant time and resources into a major renovation, consider tackling a few of these projects on your own to boost and brighten the heart of your home.
Wallpaper
While wallpaper has come back in style over the past few years, many homeowners are still reluctant to hang it in the kitchen. However, wallpaper could be the backsplash you’ve been waiting for to add texture and/or color to your space. If you are worried about the “commitment” of wallpaper, try something less permanent. There are many peel-and-stick wallpapers in trendy designs that are easy to personally install and remove.
Cabinetry
Clean and simple kitchen cabinetry is trending. Whites and neutrals can create a striking aesthetic and make the room feel fresh and updated, especially when paired with refined materials and eye-catching details. If you have lived with the same cabinetry for years, consider a refresh with a neutral like white or greige—we guarantee you will be instantly satisfied!
Kitchen Metals
Gone are the days of having everything in your kitchen match perfectly, and we are having fun with the recent trend of mixing and matching hardware. For example, choose a nickel for your knobs and a brass or matte black for your faucet. Then, experiment with a different metal for your light fixtures. Swapping out knobs and accents can be completed on your own, but we suggest calling an electrician to help with larger items like light fixtures and appliances.
Black Fixtures
Speaking of fixtures, black is a classic that will work with any style or color palette. The color is simple yet modern, and it won’t show wear and tear nearly as easily as other colors or mediums. Beyond faucets, light fixtures, bar stools and even cabinets work well in black. Our tip for this design trend is to pepper a few black elements around the room so that it doesn’t feel out of place to have a black faucet when other accessories have a different look and feel.
Colorful Accents
Color has made a comeback. While we still love a neutral kitchen, not everything has to be white. Dip your toe in the color pool instead by showcasing your vibrant pottery in glass-front cabinets, adding colorful furniture to the room or painting your kitchen island a fun, bright hue. Appliances can also liven up the space—check out Smeg and Big Chill for colorful inspiration.
Open Shelving
Open shelves have become a trend that add personality to the kitchen. Shelves are easy to install, and they are a beautiful way to showcase modern kitchenwares and other heirlooms that might otherwise stay behind cabinet doors. Another added benefit is everything is visible to the eye and easy to find!
