Why you're going: Heard of a man named Jack Daniel?
What you're doing: Not only did Jasper 'Jack” Daniel call these parts home in the late 19th century and early 20th, but his legacy still draws a quarter of a million visitors annually to the oldest registered whiskey distillery in the country. Jack Daniel Distillery's regular, hour-long tours are free and take place 360 days a year, but whiskey lovers will want to call in advance and book one of the extended tasting tours for a nominal feeyes, despite being located in a dry county, the distillery is finally allowing visitors to sample its wares.
You can easily pass the hours by popping in every storefront flanking the charming town square, but be sure to make a lunch reservation at Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House, which has two or three seatings most days. Owned by Daniel's great-grandniece, the old boarding house features family-style dining with a hostess at each table to share the history of the home and the area as heaps of Southern staples are passed around the table via a lazy Susan. (And dessert is always some kind of pie made with a healthy splash of Jack.)
